The world’s oldest running car sold for $US4.6 million

In the heady days of 1884, before the advent of petrol vehicles, the world was introduced to steam-powered cars. And this week, the oldest running steam powered car sold at Auction for $US4.62 million.

The 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout has a maximum speed of about 60kph, thanks to its twin compound steam engines. It has a range of about 32km thanks to its 20 gallon water tank, but takes about 20 minutes of preparation before it’s ready to go.

The car itself was the second prototype designed by French entrepreneur Count de Dion, and is credited with winning the world’s first car race, although it must be said that no other cars took part.

Now, who wants to see if we can convince the new owner to take his expensive new toy to Bathurst next year?
