Icon A5 is the ultimate man vehicle

What if you could own a jet-ski and a light aircraft to go in the garage with your car? Perhaps you want a jet-ski that IS a light aircraft? Stop dreaming it, because the Icon A5 is just such a vehicle!

Believe it or not, the Icon A5 is just as comfortable in the water as it is in the sky. It’s all about bringing sport flying to the hands of the everyday man, or so Icon would have us believe. We want to trust them, but looking at such a majestic vehicle seems to point to one thing and one thing only: expensive hobby.

At US$139,000, it certainly still puts itself into the expensive category, but it’s a hell of a lot more affordable than buying yourself a small Cessna. It was thanks to a new category of aircraft, as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration in the States, that brought the Icon A5 to life.

“The Sport Flying revolution has just begun. In 2004, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), working closely with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) created what has been called ‘The biggest change in aviation in 50 years’. They created an entirely new category of aircraft (Light Sport Aircraft) as well as a new category of pilot license (Sport Pilot), both aimed specifically at consumer recreational flying. Now, the dream of flight is more accessible and more affordable than ever before. Satisfy your sense of adventure… It’s time to join the ICON revolution.”

So what exactly do you get when you purchase the Icon A5? All of this:
– 1,320 pounds maximum takeoff weight (1,430 pounds for seaplanes)
– Maximum airspeed of 120 knots (138 mph)
– Maximum two-person seating capacity (pilot + passenger)
– Single, reciprocating engine
– Fixed or ground-adjustable propeller
– Non-pressurized cabin
– Fixed landing gear (retractable gear allowed for seaplanes)
– Maximum stall speed of 45 knots (52 mph)

And what does all that do? Well, check out the videos. We think you’ll agree that this is the ultimate hobby vehicle for men. Forget your go-kart, your track day car, your jet-ski or even your motorbike. Get yourself US$139,000 and get into one of these! Oh, and if you can’t afford one, don’t worry, there is a model you can buy that also floats and flies!
