Mahindra XUV500 – the Indians are joining the party

If you’re a hater of SUVs and all things that stand tall among the average sized sedan, you’re not going to like this. Indian car maker Mahindra is about to unleash the immensely popular XUV500 in Australia for seriously good prices.

Under $30,000 for a seven seat SUV? Yep, and you don’t have to buy a Chinese Great Wall to get it. Instead, you can buy an Indian Mahindra XUV500. The SMH is reporting that they are so popular in India, you have to go into a lottery to have the privilege of buying one!

What makes them any good? Well, the price for one. Most people buying SUVs will be subjecting them to the torment of children with muddy shoes, sports gears and the habit of projectile vomiting every now and then. Kind of of ruins the idea of purchasing a really expensive SUV to ferry around the kids.

Secondly, the features are, as you would imagine, quite respectable. The idea of Chinese and now Indian cars is that you can get a good feature set at a cut price rather than no features at a super cut price. In the case of the Mahindra XUV500 you will find yourself with a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel that pushes out 103kW of power with a six-speed manual transmission. Strangely enough, there is no word of an automatic yet, usually something that goes hand in hand with seven-seat SUV.

There’s a bit of technology involved to, with a 6-inch digital display to control media. It includes USB and sat nav as well as a reversing camera.

So how much under $30,000 are you likely to pay for a Mahindra XUV500? The price is yet to be set, but expect between $26,000 and $29,000, to compete with the Great Wall X200 SUV. It will be going on sale in the next few weeks.
