Adult classification for games coming next year

It’s official. After years of a ridiculous classification system that treated games differently to other media by not including an adult classification, next year we’ll see a change with the Senate passing legislation to make it a reality.

Having already passed through the House of Representatives back in March, last night the Senate approved the legislation without amendments. Which means that we could realistically see R18+ classified games as soon as January 1 2013.

The final hurdle – if you can call it a hurdle at all – is that classification is officially a state government issue and will require complimentary state legislation to come into effect. That means there is potential for states to stuff it up (we’re looking at you South Australia), although that is ultimately unlikely.
