Your complete guide to following the Winter Games in Sochi on Social and Apps

It’s winter in Russia and with the world moving into Sochi for the 2014 Olympic Games we’re certainly better placed than ever to keep across what’s happening than ever before.  Here’s a quick look at some of the ways you can keep in touch and even particpate in your own competitive way to the 2014 Winter Olympic fever.

Sochi on Ten for info and live streaming

In 2014 it’s hard to ignore the hype around a global event like the Winter Olympics even though here in Australia they are nothing on the scale of a “Summer” Olympic Games.  Social media plays a huge role in that, with the Australian Olympic Team overall having their own Twitter account and Facebook page you can follow, along with almost every Aussie athlete competing.

Australia has sent our largest team of athletes ever and the best way to follow them on social media is to check their profile page on the Australian Olympic Team website and follow the links to each of them.

The Olympic Athletes Hub

Some of our top contenders are online too however given the hysteria around social media and its impact on athletes we’re not too sure if they’ll be too active until competition is over. Chumpy Pullin @chumpypullin, Dale Begg Smith @DaleBeggSmith85, Russ Henshaw @RussHenshaw, Lydia Lassila @LydiaLassila, Scotty James @scottyjames31, Anna Segal @AnnaSegal, and Torah Bright @TorahBright.

For complete access to all the social activity coming out of Sochi, check out the Olympic Athletes Hub app on iTunes and Google Play

Of course the dramas around the construction at the venues has sparked a bit of fun on twitter as well – the @SochiProblems account documents some of the amazing stuff that is just “not quite done” on the ground in Sochi.

When it comes to coverage the Ten Network has the rights across Australia and they’re putting a lot of effort into the coverage both on-air and online. They have an App for live streaming as well as loads of additional information from the event. Some of their team on the ground in Sochi are well worth a follow on twitter too – like Steven Bradbury @SteveBradbury73 and Magdelena Roze @Magdalena_Roze.

You can download the Sochi on Ten app from the iTunes App Store and from the Google Play Store.

Barrell Jump – Winter Games

Back in my day, and showing just how far the world has come, technology has come and perhaps even the Winter Games have come – there was just one game to play – “Winter Games”.  I’m not sure Barrell Jump ever made it into the games, but if it did I’d watch it.  However today you don’t need to ruin your joystick on the run-up, you can play plenty of games right on your mobile phone or tablet.

For something a little more immersive, try the The Everywhere Cam from Visa on iTunes which gives you video camera access to the sports themselves, the athletes competing and offers a full 360 degree view of the experience – it’s pretty darn cool!

So with that, enjoy – Good luck team Australia!
