The Garage – BMW 428i Coupe M Sport Line

German luxury dominates the EFTM Garage this week, now we cast our eyes over one of BMW’s most attractive propositions – the 4 Series. Now a standalone variant, this executive compact coupe turns heads and simply makes you feel just a little bit special.

Make: BMW

Model: 4 Series

Variant: 428i

Engine: 1,997cc, 4 Cylinder petrol

Transmission: 8-speed automatic including gearshift

Vital Stats: 180kW @5,000 – 6,500rpm

Torque: 350Nm @1,250 – 4,800rpm

BMW Claimed Fuel Economy: 6.4l/100km

EFTM Claimed Fuel Economy: 9.6/100km

MRRP Price: $80,500

As-Driven options: Metallic Paint $1,840, M Sport Brakes $1,400, Glass Sunroof $2,920, M Sport Package $2000 – (19’’ M light alloy wheels, Double-spoke 442 M, ambience light, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, BMW Individual roofliner Anthracite, BMW Sports Seats, Exhaust tailpipe in high-finish Chrome, Kidney grille in Black high-gloss, wider bars, M Aerodynamics Package, M door sill finishers and M leather steering wheel)

As-Driven MRRP: $86,860

Wow Factor: Legitimate eye candy from just about every perspective and a tad longer and wider than its predecessor the 3 Series Coupe. Even though it still shares plenty of DNA with the 3 Series sedan it now sports a more convincing and larger Grand Touring look.

Most Impressive: Bank vault-like build quality, but with the grace and performance of a fine thoroughbred. Without doubt a BMW, yet still unique enough to standout among an increasingly crowded Bavarian lineup.

Not So Impressive: To really look and feel the part, expensive options such as the fitted “M Sport Package” are a must. Typically with most Europeans lesser roads will rock the premium / luxury boat ride.

Early Verdict: It has seductive appeal just sitting in the driveway, wafting down the road in one will seal the deal for most
