Apple ups the ante on display with a 5K resolution iMac

It’s go hard or go home when it comes to Apple’s flagship iMac range of computers.  These all-in-one computers have for a long time been the leader in design, and for their sheer simplicity of setup are a growing favourite for many.  Sales of Mac’s went up 18% last year, there’s little doubt the iMac plays a big role in that.  Today in Cupertino Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed a stunning new display for the 27 inch iMac.

Apple calls it “Retina 5K” and as the name suggests, it has a higher resolution than even the newest and latest “4K” screens.

At 5120×2880 there’s 14.7million pixels on the screen.  Throw in Intel Core i5 or i7 power and an AMD Radeon graphics card and you’ve got some pretty decent performance on-screen.

Aimed at professional photo and video users the iMac with Retina 5K will start at $2,999 in Australia.

For that money you’ll get:

  • 3.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
  • 8GB (two 4GB) memory
  • 1TB Fusion Drive1
  • AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 2GB video memory

If you’re in the “go hard or go home” category, then perhaps you’ll add more power and space:

  • 4.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 4x8GB
  • 3TB Fusion Drive
  • AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5

Those specifications take the total price to $4,509.

The iMac with Retina 5K is available now.
