For now the Holden Cruze remains the only small car built on our shores, the popular offering has just undergone a facelift for 2015. The Holden Cruze range topping SRi-V hatch model has been in EFTM Garage this week, here’s a quick overview.
Make: Holden
Model: Cruze
Variant: SRi-V Hatch
Engine / Transmission: 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol with 6-speed automatic transmission.
Vital Stats: 132kW/230Nm
Holden Claimed Fuel Economy: 7.4L / 100km
EFTM Claimed Fuel Economy: 8.2L/ 100km
Wow Factor: 2015 brings a couple of buckets loaded with goodies along including new 18’’ alloy wheels, rain sensing wipers and flashier bucket style seats which include suede inserts. The SRi-V model can also now be started remotely just like the larger VF Commodore, the ability to cool or heat the car from a distance is a neat feature.
Most Impressive: For a small car there’s a high level of technology thrown in. Satellite navigation and Holden’s excellent MyLink system keep the Cruze competitive. New daytime running lights also make the little hatch standout in a crowd. Handling is sharpish and once moving the 1.6-litre turbo-charged unit can be fun, however paddle shifters would be nice.
Least Impressive: The 2015 look is not for everyone, the double-decker front grill fascia looks a little awkward and reeks of USA influence. Interior quality has that typical GM feel about it, not overly impressive with cheapish plastics and a level of quality that falls behind Mazda and Hyundai with Nissan also marginally better.
Early Verdict: The Holden Cruze is a proven performer on the sales charts, the 2015 refresh will spark renewed interest in what is a capable but not all that exciting offering.
