Vodafone launches build-your-own Prepaid recharges with MyMix

Vodafone have today revealed a new way to recharge for prepaid customers which will allow them to drive better value from their recharge by customising what they want from their money – it’s called Vodafone MyMix.

Vodafone’s Marketing Message for MyMix

While not a first for Australia, it is most certainly a first for the major carriers.  This reminds me of what upstart telco Yatango early on – they were trying to allow people to choose specifically what they could get in their mobile plan each month.  Vodafone’s MyMix operates quite simply – you choose the duration of the recharge, the amount of data, the type of call plan and your international call usage and a price is calculated for you.

The standard recharge, swipe to the left for “MyMix”

Of course, you can still choose a standard Vodafone recharge option, but a swipe to the left will show the MyMix options and allow your to possibly remove things you don’t need.

The MyMix Option Screen

For example, if you’re not someone who makes many or any calls, why not remove the “infinite” call allowance.  Drop that down to 120 minutes, and remove any allowance for International calls and there are instant savings.

On a 28 day expiry, getting 3.5GB, the difference could be $5 by removing the infinite calls.

And then there’s the expiry itself, the option to throw on 90 days worth of credit is fantastic.  Infinite calls for three months and just 500MB of data is just $20 a month (a $60 recharge), or throw 12GB on there for 90 days usage and drop the calls to 120 minutes and you’ll pay just $30 a month (a $90 recharge)

On all Prepaid plans, unlimited Texts are included, so no need to choose there.

As we see it, here are a couple of standard Vodafone recharge options:

  • $30 – 1.5GB – Unlimited Calls & Texts
  • $40 – 4GB – Unlimited Calls & Texts – 90mins international

Switch over to a Vodafone MyMix recharge and the options are a bit different:

  • $30 – 3.5GB, 120mins calls, no international
  • $40 – 9GB, 120mins calls, no international
  • $50 – 12GB, 120mins calls, no international
  • $25 – 500MB, Unlimited calls, no international

As always, it’s a busy market out there, there are still marginally better deals though at Kogan and Amaysim for example, but just the option to mix and match your recharge each and every time exhibits flexibility – something people would love rather than just having one or two recharge choices.

Should be a hit with those looking for value.
