Bringing back your music – Rega Planar 2 Turntable Review

For the older generation reading this, it’s time to rekindle some great music memories.  For you young ones – it’s time to discover music as it was intended.  Vinyl baby, Vinyl.

Now I’m no audiophile, so I’m not here to compare the sound quality of this versus that, but what I have taken much joy out of in the time I’ve been reviewing the Rega Planar 2 is the process of listening to Vinyl.

You see, with Vinyl you can’t just set and forget, you can’t just hit shuffle.  You have to make decisions, you have to choose what vinyl to put down – you even need to sit through some tracks you don’t love to get to the ones that matter.

I plugged the Rega Planar 2 in, sent the ouput through a small amp and plugged the audio into one of my Sonos speakers.  Dusted off the boxes of 33’s and 45’s I have from my childhood and began to rediscover the music and the joy of vinyl.

I honestly can’t fault the sound quality of this turntable.  This is no cheapo KMart job here folks, at $849 you’re going to want to love music to get that deep back into your vinyl, but after just a few nights of listening I’m gutted to have to send this one back – and that’s a rare thing for me to say.

The unit itself is quite simple, basic in fact.  The glass platter which sits on the centre of the unit supports your vinyl ensuring it doesn’t waver and wobble around.

A belt drive from the motor underneath sits on one of two notches to indicate your 33 or 45 selection – this is a very basic concept that delivers utterly beautiful sound.

The needle sits well, the arm feels very well counter balanced and the lever to lower the needle gently is a very nice touch.

My only real gripe about the unit is the perspex cover, looks good, and does a good job of blocking the analog needle sound, but it comes off so very easily – I should check, but perhaps it comes with screws to keep it in – I certainly didn’t have those to add.

The audio is faultless, and the design is simple yet stunning.

As I’ve said, I think the process of deciding on songs, changing the vinyl after each single, or listening through to a whole album is something you will absolutely love.

Sure there is a place for Spotify and Apple Music when you just want to let go, but for an afternoon or evening enjoying music, the turntable must be king.
