Winter means staying in with a bottle of Red

While summer is a lovely time of year to get outside and enjoy the best beaches in the world, Australia brings a mighty winter and with that, we can enjoy some of our stunning wines. With the fireplace on and a whole lot of Netflix waiting to be watched, here are some wines that you can buy now for these winter months ahead.

Handpicked Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

We recently enjoyed a selection of wines at the Handpicked cellar door in Chippendale and while there were many to sample on the cold evening, we left with one favourite for this list and recommend it on it’s own or served with an amazing lamb roast. This cabernet sauvignon comes from my favourite region for the variety, Coonawarra in South Australia.

Available here for $24.99

Artemis Shiraz 2013

The southern highlands of NSW has been a best kept secret lately for wine, it is closer to Sydney than you think and is producing some amazing wines in a less touristy area. Artemis is a fantastic place to visit for wood fired pizza on the weekend but this particular wine was also a stand-out. It’s unlike a shiraz you’d expect from the Barossa with a much less dirt-chew in the mouth, it’s lighter yet full bodied enough to live up the name.

Available here for $35 or at the cellar door in Bowral, well worth the trip.

It might have been the room we were in when we first tasted this wine but this Barossa Shiraz was rather impressive. We were in the Mercedes F1 lounge above the garages at Albert Park, there were a series of wines available and this one was the one we returned to more than once. We looked up the labels and were impressed to find how low cost they were. This example of Barossa Shiraz is a bargain to experience and will give you that exclusive feeling that it’s good enough for a championship winning Formula 1 team so it must be suitable for your night in.

Available here for $12

This pinot noir comes from the the lands where stunning pinot noir grows, Marlborough in New Zealand. This particular bottle of wine from Stoneleigh Vineyards is unique in the way it is produced. The fermentation process is natural, without intervention and the flavours produced are rather unique and the end result is a delicious drop on it’s own or with a warm meal. Beware, it is extremely easy to drink.

Available here for less than $15

Viniterra Select Malbec 2013

Brought to Australia by a company who specialises in Malbec wines, this bottle is from the home of Malbec, Argentina. Malbec is usually a spicey, tannic wine but we found this to be the smoothest, full flavoured and long lasting drop in a long time. It’s a stunning wine that should be shared and enjoyed. It will surprise you and your guests whether standing around a BBQ or a long slow cooked roast.

Available here for $32
