Alongside a huge iPhone announcement at their Apple Park HQ in Cupertino, Apple has also announced a new version of the Apple Watch.
Still a similar design to the Series 1 and Series 2, the Series 3 Apple Watch features “Cellular Built-In”, which in Aussie terms means 4G.
This advance means users can wear the watch, not carry their phone and still receive calls and messages when on the go.
Siri will work no matter where you are, Find my Friends will switch from your phone to the watch, and next month Apple Music will work on Apple Watch and allow you to stream everything you want -40,000,000 songs without having your phone on you.
But it does this not with a SIM card inserted into the watch, it uses an eSIM – a SIM embedded into the watch itself, saving space and allowing Apple to keep the watch the same size.
In many countries, Telcos are operating dual SIM accounts, allowing a user to receive calls on one number, across two SIM cards, including an eSIM – this means leave your phone behind and people can call you on your normal number just on your watch.
Australian Telcos have not previously adopted this technology, so single number sharing across your phone and watch wouldn’t have been thought to be possible – however, Apple confirmed the Apple Watch Series 3 will launch in Australia on September 22 through Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.
The watch itself has 70% more performance, with a new Dual Core processor, which enables Siri Voice, plus it will open a range of new options for App developers.
During today’s announcement, Tim Cook also revealed that Apple Watch is now the best selling watch brand in the world.
