A Car Enthusiasts Heaven, in Gosford

Around an hour from Sydney you can find yourself in a museum that would make a car fan weak at the knees. You may not even know that this place exists but we’ve now seen it with our own eyes and we’re already planning a return trip.

The 11,000 square meter Gosford Classic Car Museum is actually an old Bunnings building that has been completely refurbished and turned into a mecca for over 450 cars to be seen. The collection spreads from classic 1962 Jaguar E Type to the amazing Ferrari La Ferrari, the only one in Australia. The building houses around $70 million worth of cars, $5 million alone went into the La Ferrari.

The important thing to note about the collection is that the cars are all restored and all in stunning condition. They’re also rotated, sold and regularly maintained so you may not see the same cars on a return visit. If you fall in love with a vehicle though, they’re all technically for sale.

We attended as part of an auction of 68 classic cars from the museum and saw some sell for $30,000 and some had bids over $1.5 million.

The museum has plenty of parking, which you’d expect from an old Bunnings but in the car park you might be surprised to see an American Army Humvee. You enter via a stunning gift store which if you visit before Christmas will see you sorted for December 25th. Upon leaving the store you almost immediately see a Ford GT 40, classic Porsche’s and Ferrari’s. There is no holding back in this exhibit, the cars are beautiful, accessible and the catalogue is huge. Even one day may not be enough to truly see everything.

What we learned from the visit was that the staff are as passionate about the cars as you are, it’s almost like visiting a mates place when they just bought a new car. Everyone is keen for a chat to share their stories and answer any questions you might have. When hunger strikes you’ll find a classic diner with milkshakes and burgers, we can’t complain there.

The Gosford Classic Car Museum is one of those perfect road trip venues for a day out. It is an easy drive there, they’re open Wednesday to Sunday 9am-5pm so get a convoy together and see the sexiest rides in Australia.
