Nope it’s not a SUV, it’s a SAC or as BMW puts it “Sports Activity Coupe”. The brand-new BMW X2 has arrived in Australia, hitting showrooms in March. The very different looking X2 is based on the X1 platform and will arrive with a front-wheel drive sDrive20i drivetrain.
“We are excited to be adding the BMW X2 to the small premium SUV segment,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner.
“The X2’s dynamic stance and highly efficient turbocharged petrol engine combine with outstanding connectivity and infotainment systems to create a sporty vehicle of outstanding versatility,” he said.
Pricing is key in this rather competive segment and today we found out the before on-road costs across the range.
The X2 sDrive20i will weigh in at $55,900 with a long list of standard features including:
Australia is the biggest market for M packages being fitted to customers’ BMWs, on the X2 the M Sport X package is fitted as standard while the popular M Sport offering is a no-cost option.
M Sport X adds contrasting lower exterior cladding in Frozen Grey, extended Frozen Grey horizontal sections to the front bumper, sanitised aluminium exterior and style ‘722 M’ Orbit Grey 19-inch light alloy wheels as standard. Inside, the cloth / Alcantara interior trim is highlighted by yellow contrast stitching.
Tick the M Sport Package and you’ll score extra dynamic bodywork, ‘715 M’ 19-inch light alloy wheels in Orbit Grey, dark shadow exterior inserts and contrasting blue interior stitching. The aluminium Hexagon interior trims are also in Blue matte finish.
Of course, there are option packages that may tempt you to part with more of your hard earned. An Innovations Package adds $2,600 and adds driving assistant plus as well as active cruise control with stop & go function, navigation system plus, a head-up display and ConnectedDrive “Freedom” including concierge services.
A Comfort Package tips the scales at $2,700. For that owners score comfort access, electric seat adjustment for driver and front passenger, with memory function, lumbar support for driver and front passenger, front seat heating and an exterior driver-side mirror with anti-dazzle function.
The Style Plus Package tops out at $3,300 including 20-inch BMW M light alloy wheels in double-spoke style 717 M (style 716 M is also available), metallic paintwork and a panorama glass sunroof.
Vital Stats
The X2, as mentioned, arrives initially only in sDrive20i form. So front-wheel drive, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine up front pumping out 141kW / 280Nm torque sent through a seven-speed DCT transmission.
The X2 is marginally shorter than the X1 yet wider and lower but with the same wheelbase. Plus check out the BMW roundel on the C-pillar, that’s a nod to the 1968 E9 Coupe and a great touch!
