HipAir : Belt-worn airbag for the elderly to protect their hips in a fall

Last year at CES a company called HELITE announced an airbag vest for motorcycle riders which got a lot of attention – well this year they’ve come out with a product for a completely different demographic – the Elderly.

Hip’Air is a belt worn by the elderly which has in it a CO2 canister which inflates two large airbags on either side of the belt in the event of a fall.

The belt detects a sudden fall or slip and within 200ms deploys the airbags.

Testing in France right now, its expected on the market toward the end of the year and would be priced around $1000 Australian Dollars.

If the airbags are not deployed, the device is guaranteed for 10 years.  If there is a fall, the device can be re-used by replacing the canister and airbags within it.
