LG showing off an 88inch 8K OLED TV at IFA Berlin

Finally next month we get a 4K TV Channel from Foxtel – 4K TVs are the current standard in retail stores and 4K Blu Rays and streaming Netflix and Stan in 4K are amazing ways to enjoy great content.  But that’s old technology now.

LG have unveiled their “World’s First” 8K TV at IFA here in Berlin.

It’s a world first because it’s OLED – we’ve seen 8K demo TVs before from heaps of companies including Hisense – as demos at CES, but not OLED.

8K is four times the pixel density of 4K with a resolution of 7680×4320 – so the detail is immense.

The reason this is a technology that needs to be pushed toward is just the sheer size of the TVs we are buying today.  At 65 and 75 inches as the desire for many buyers, when we start filling our walls with screens, an 88 inch TV is really going to show up the imperfections of even a HD picture.

Don’t expect to see this unit in your local Harvey Norman store – it might be a year or three before they hit retail, but LG reckons the market for 8K TVs will grow to 5 million units (globally) by 2022.

“LG’s first 8K OLED TV is the result of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “4K OLED has played a role in reshaping the TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same.”

Don’t be thinking this is just a gimmick, Samsung looks to be going 8K too – we’ve already seen billboards in Berlin announcing that.
