Virtual racing with McLaren and HTC’s VIVE

Just hours after the 2018 Formula One season ended in Abu Dhabi McLaren have taken a virtual step toward their fans with the release of a special edition HTC Vive headset.

The HTC VIVE Pro McLaren limited edition headset is the first output from the HTC and McLaren partnership announced earlier this year and gives a VR Racing Experience to fans.

It’s all McLaren to look at with the distinct Papaya Orange and blue, but also comes with a new “McLaren Garage VR” experience as well as a custom version of RFactor 2,

The Garage VR is a McLaren pit crew simulation allowing you to be part of a pitstop challenge and learn about the pit stops.

Alvin Wang Graylin, China President at HTC said “Grand Prix auto racing attracts over 500 million fans globally, and we’re excited to partner with McLaren to bring a unique perspective to race fans through VR,”

“Through our collaboration, we’re combining our best-in-class VR headset with their long heritage of racing expertise to create the most immersive experience for fans across the globe. This is a chance for customers to go beyond being a spectator and feel the excitement of being a McLaren driver or pit crew right from their living rooms.”

2019 McLaren driver Lando Norris says “VR is an incredibly exciting technology that brings fans closer to racing than ever before. The realistic experience provided by the VIVE Pro McLaren Limited Edition headset can be enjoyed by everyone from casual gamers to professional drivers.”

You’ve gotta be keen though – it’s available now in Australia for – wait for it – $2,499!
