Wines for the Cricket fan

If you or someone you know loves cricket but maybe wants a change from a cold beer, there are a series of wines from a cricketing legend that might tickle your fancy.

Sir Ian Botham has 40 years experience of international cricket and commentating the great game. During that time, travelling the world means also being able to live one of his other passions – wine. Not just drinking wine, Ian has a passion for creating wine.

The Botham Wines collection includes seven winesacross three different groups – ranging from $11 to $100 per bottle – all made in Australia’s premium wine regions. Ian might not be an Aussie but it’s good to see that he acknowledges our great wine, even if our cricket performance isn’t up to par these days.

“My philosophy going into this was simple. I knew the style of wine I was looking for, and I wanted to offer exceptional but reasonably priced wines. I truly believe the wines we’ve brought to market are exceptional varietal examples from their respective regions,” Sir Ian said.

We’ve been sampling the middle of the range and must say, we’re impressed. A Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay all below $20 per bottle. The Cabernet Sauvignon is from our favourite wine region for CabSav, the Coonawarra, and this is a mighty fine example. After our first sip we compared it to examples priced at twice as much.

If you prefer something less expensive you’ll be able to find different Shiraz and Chardonnay from $11 per bottle and if you’re keen to splash out for Ian Botham then the Single Vineyard Shiraz or Adelaide Hills Chardonnay will set you back $100 per bottle.

If you’re keen on getting some of this cricket legend’s wine in your glass you’re best to head to Cellarmasters.com.au quickly, that way you’ll have them on hand for Christmas as a gift or on the table at lunch!
