First Electric Harley-Davidson Announced

Panasonic Automotive and Harley-Davidson today announced an electric Harley called the LiveWire. Launching in North America this August, the LiveWire is Harley-Davidson’s first attempt at an EV bike.

The company has plans to introduce a full range of EV bikes branding the famous name by 2022. The LiveWire is said to be a “high-performance motorcycling experience infused with a new level of technology.”

The joint effort with Panasonic also adds a layer of never seen before connectivity in this space. The Panasonic OneConnect service platform in the US allows for a cellular connection to the telematics control unit (TCU). This will complement the Harley-Davidson App and new Harley- Davidson Connect service. When combined riders are able to access a range of information via their smartphones including battery range, charging status, tamper alerts, bike location and GPS tracking.

Other useful info at hand includes service reminders. You may be wondering about what happens to the distinctive Harley-Davidson soundtrack well the brand says “The LiveWire model is designed to produce a new signature Harley-Davidson sound as it accelerates and gains speed. This new futuristic sound represents the smooth, electric power of the LiveWire motorcycle”

“Our technology will help provide a new level of convenience and peace of mind to motorcycle riders,” said David Taylor, Executive Director Product Strategy and Business Development, Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America. “From battery charge status to vehicle tracking, riders will have a better understanding of their vehicle and can focus on enjoying the ride.”

“Harley-Davidson is taking the lead in the electrification of motorcycles, and we’re excited to be working with Panasonic Automotive to make that a reality,” said Marc McAllister, Vice President Product Planning and Portfolio, Harley-Davidson. “Their team has the knowledge and drive to create an incredible product to help us connect consumers to their riding information.”

It will do the 0-100km/h bolt in under 3.5 seconds. However the first electric Harley won’t be cheap when it goes on sale starting at $29,799 USD or around $41,700 Aussie dollars in August. We await news about Australian availability.
