Telstra announces new no-lock in plans – Simplifying all their plans

When Telstra announced last year dramatic changes to their business, including job losses and a new forward strategy, they also announced they would get their total offering of plans to consumers down from a staggering 1800 options to just 20.

Today is that day.

And it’s actually a very big deal for Telstra.

They’re removing lock-in contracts and separating the mobile plan cost from the handset repayment cost, and offering those handset repayments over 24 or 36 months.

Almost as if they’ve seen another Telco doing the same thing? Yep, this is what Vodafone did just under two years ago with their plan revamp. Imitation is the best form of flattery as they say!

Telstra say with confidence that as of today all of their consumer and small business mobile plans offer No Lock in contract, the freedom to change plans every month, no excess data chargers, two and three year handset repayment options.

If you get a device on a three year repayment, and decide to leave Telstra within that time – you just pay out the device.

Telstra CEO Andy Penn said, “Customers expect to be able to personalise their experiences and only pay for what they want or need. They also want to be able to change their mind month-to-month as their individual needs change. I am extremely proud that Telstra now offers customers that flexibility, so they can tailor their plan to suit their lives.

“This might mean upgrading your mobile plan around school holidays, adding a sport package for footy finals season, adding international data for that overseas holiday or, for our business customers, scaling their plan with the peaks and flows of their business,” Mr Penn said.

While Mr Penn is still very keen to push 5G: “The launch of our new plans coincides with the roll out of the first 5G devices on our network and the ongoing rollout of Telstra’s 5G network. There has never been a more exciting time for Australians to consider the role technology has to play in making the most of how we work, live and play. We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to embrace this new era with more freedom and flexibility across our plans.

There is a catch – 5G is an “add on” to their $50 and $60 plans, which is a free trial until 30 June 2020, then comes at a cost of $15 per month if you want it – it’s included on the higher priced plans.

All the new plans are on the Telstra Website now – here’s our look at the plans currently available (there are less than 20 – with more still to be announced)
