Remember the 1987 Bathurst 1000? It was also a round of the World Touring Car Championship, bringing cars and drivers from around the world to take on our best.
And it was a cracker race too.
Next year, Bathurst will fire up for an additional race with the inaugural Bathurst International to be held in late November or early December.
The date is subject to finding a gap in the international racing calendars, one that would allow plenty of international interest in the various categories that will take to the mountain.
The TCR series touring cars will be the headliner, with a 500km race around the mountain featuring main and co-drivers in a field set to pack the grid at 55 cars.
Alongside them on the program will be the new locally born open-wheel class the S5000’s. With Rubens Barrichello having raced at their first race at Sandown, you’d like to think that Mount Panorama would be enough to entice Rubens, if not many more great drivers to Australia.
There will be Trans Am 2 cars which is a modern muscle car series, along with the classics through the Touring Car Masters.
Oh, and then there’s the LMP3 sports cars – this is going to be one hell of a weekend.
It’s the Winfield Triple Challenge on drugs!
Bring it on.
