What we searched for in 2019 – Google’s long list of trends

Who the hell is James Charles? Ditto, Jordyn Woods? How do we find out? Easy – Google it. Well, that’s what lots of Aussies did in 2019 with those two names along with singer Billie Eilish taking the top three as Global Figures in the 2019 Google Search stats.

Overall, Aussies heeding the warnings to stay informed about the bushfires with Fires near me topping the charts as our highest search trend. Trend is the way Google defines their rankings, using a year on year look at the search to see which searches have had the highest bump in numbers.

Elections dominated the news, while the Christchurch shooting and Brexit also made the list. Sports were dominated by the Rugby and Cricket world cups, along with the Ashes, and the Women’s World Cup which made the top 10.

Most troubling, or encouraging, depending on if you’re a glass half full or empty kinda guy was the fact that “How to Vote” searches made up five of the top ten “how to” searches.

Bunnings should be happy though, How to build a deck and how to lay pavers were big on our DIY lists in 2019.
