Details on possible Pixel 5a and foldable Pixel emerge

There’s nothing like a good Pixel rumour, and as we head further into 2021, details on the Pixel 5a, as well as details on a foldable Pixel phone.

Foldable Pixel

Google specifically called out the new category of foldable devices when they launched Android 11, and it seems they’re getting serious about launching a foldable of their own as more devices emerge from other manufacturers.

According to a report from Korean news site TheElec, Google is looking to use a 7.6-inch foldable Samsung OLED display on the device which is apparently codenamed ‘Passport’.

The report also points to foldable devices from OPPO and Xiaomi which are also looking to use Samsung foldable displays.

Just when we’ll see a foldable Pixel is anyone’s guess, but later rather than sooner is likely the best idea.

Pixel 5a

While Folding Pixel phones may be fun, there’s also news on the upcoming Pixel 5a with details on the phone shared on Voice by Onleaks aka Steve Hemmerstoffer.

There’s not a lot of detail on the phone spec-wise, but Hemmerstoffer has had renders created based on his information.

The renders show a similar design to last year’s Pixel 4a series, though with  few differences.

Size wise, the Pixel 5a lines up closer to the larger Pixel 4a (5G) model than the Pixel 4a. The Pixel 5a will include a large 6.2-inch FHD+ OLED display in a body that measures  156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8 mm, slightly larger than the Pixel 4a (5G) which measured 153.9 x 74 x 8.2 mm and also had a 6.24-inch display.

The body will include dual speaker cut-outs on the base either side of a USB-C port, and there’s a colour pop on the power button which also gets a bit of texture in the render.

According to the post, the Pixel 5a will include a unibody design “likely plastic made” which fits in line with materials on the Pixel ‘a’ series phones. The Pixel 5a will also retain the headphone jack and the Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor which will again be on the rear of the phone.

Notably the Pixel 5a render shows a dual camera configuration, though the exact sensors aren’t known it’s possible Google may re-use the 12.2MP dual-pixel and 16 MP ultrawide sensor combo used on the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 last year.

After last years scattershot launch of the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5, exactly when we’ll see the Pixel 5a launch is anyone’s guess. Google hasn’t announced any plans for I/O, where they launched the Pixel 3a series, so we may have to wait for the end of the year for more details.
