DJI announces Mavic 3 Drone with improved flight time, camera system and more

DJI have unveiled the latest in the Mavic line of drones, with the launch of the Mavic 3. The new drone includes a new and improved camera system and longer flight times, and for budding cinematographers there’s the Mavic 3 Cine offering even more video options.

The Mavic 3 has been redesigned ‘from tip to tail’ says DJI though it still folds away for compact storage and transport. The drone has been improved over the last generation with a larger battery for longer flights – up to 46 minutes – and improved obstacle sensing and navigation systems. The drone can also fly further with an up to 15km range, with the DJI O3+ able to deliver a more stable connection between the drone and controller with ‘with higher stability and less video lag’.

The Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine drones feature a new dual-camera Hasselblad system which now features a larger 4/3 CMOS sensor capable of taking 20MP still images in 12-bit RAW format and videos in 5.1K at 50fps or 4K at 120fps, even in low-light.

DJI is offering options for colour profiles with the drone capturing aerial videos in up to 1 billion colours to the 10-bit D-Log color profile, which DJI says offers ‘natural color gradations and advanced flexibility in post-production’.

For the Mavic 3 Cine the addition of ‘Apple ProRes 422 HQ encoding for richer video processing’ adds more options and to capture the additional data an internal 1TB SSD onboard for high-speed data storage – while the Mavic 3 gets 8 GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot for storage.

Operators can also take advantage of the 28x hybrid zoom to get closer to the action while maintaining a safe distance.

DJI has improved their obstacle avoidance with APAS 5.0 and smart subject tracking with ActiveTrack 5.0 on the Mavic 3. There’s also more precise positioning with updated GPS that allows for more precise hovering.

The Mavic 3 has the APAS 5.0 system on-board uses six fish-eye cameras and two wide-angle sensors to perform obstacle avoidance and plan flight-paths with the safest route.

ActiveTrack 5.0 also improves the object tracking on the Mavic 3 with the ability to move with a subject in shot or even alongside and around them in any direction.
