Intel unveils new 12th Gen Intel Core mobile and Desktop processors

At CES 2022 we’re seeing a lot of new computers announced, and Intel is also announcing new 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors, as well as new 12th Gen Intel Core desktop processors to power these upcoming systems.

Mobile

The new 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors are up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation mobile processor, offering a faster option for laptop users to create, work or entertain wherever they need.

There are 28 new 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors announced, headlined by the Intel Core i9-12900HK – which Intel describes as ‘not only the world’s best mobile gaming platform, but also the fastest mobile processor ever created’. Indeed, Intel says the new Core i9-12900HK can offer up to 43% higher performance in 3D rendering gen-over-gen.

The new processors are built on the Intel 7 process (10nm Enhanced SuperFin {ESF}) with a 45W power base powering up to 14 cores (6 Performance, 8 Efficiency cores) and include support for both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, as well as the new PCIe Gen5 SSD spec and of course support for Thunderbolt 4 and  Intel Wi-Fi 6E.

We’ll see new laptops from manufacturers including Dell, Lenovo, ACER, HP, ASUS and more offering the new processor, with Intel announcing there are more than 100 designs coming utilising the new processors.

Desktop

Intel hasn’t forgotten desktop users, with 22 new processors being added to the 12 Gen Intel Core desktop processor range. The new processors offer a range of core configurations ranging from 16 cores (8 Performance cores, 8 Efficiency cores) down to 2 cores (2 Performance cores, 0 Efficieny cores) with TDP offerings ranging from 35W to 65W offering scalable performance for gaming, content creation and productivity.

Intel are also introducing new chipsets to support a broad range of consumer processors. The new H670, H610 and B660 chipsets will support a lot of capabilities including PCIe 4.0 lanes, integrated Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) and Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) and for over-clockers there’s support for memory and processor over-clocking.

Intel is also updating their cooling with new Laminar coolers for the 65W chips including the Laminar RS1 for Pentium and Celeron CPUswhich offers basic cooling, through the Laminar RM1 for Core i3/i5/i7 processors which utilises a quieter process, all the way up to the Laminar RH1 for Core i9 processors which offers nearly silent running as well as aRGB lighting.

Intel has already seen uptake of the new Desktop processors and architecture, with 140+ customers from more than 30 countries offering over 200 motherboards supporting the design. We’ll see these designs arriving over the next 12 months.

EVO

With the launch of the new 12th Gen Intel Core processors, Intel has also announced updates to their EVO certification program, first introduced in 2020.

The EVO certification program is one introduced by Intel as an extension of Project Athena and aims to give consumers confidence that their laptop will offer pre-defined levels of performance and functionality.

The latest update to the EVO platform will of course include all the defaults which includes ‘9 or more hours of real-world battery life on systems with FHD displays’ which includes  fast charging ‘with up to 4-hour charge in under 30 minutes’, but now requires an Intel 12th Gen Core processor. EVO certified laptops will also need a 1080p webcam and Dynamic Background Noise Suppression to remove any background noise. You’ll also be guaranteed better connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E and Intel Connectivity Performance Suite.

Intel has also announced new changes to the EVO program aimed at offering creators a level f comfort when purchasing a laptop. The newer performance EVO certification will require higher performance metrics including using one of the new 12th Gen Core H-series processorsas well as the upcoming Intel ARC graphics.

We’ll be seeing these new EVO certified laptops very soon, with Intel announcing there are more than 100 co-engineered designs – including foldables – using 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors which will be available for purchase in the first half of 2022.
