Microsoft announces new Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5, Surface Studio 2+ and more

Ten years after launching the original Surface tablet, Microsoft Chief Product Officer, Panos Panay, has unveiled a range of new Surface devices at an event in the US overnight. The new range includes the new Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5 and an update to the Surface Studio desktop.

Surface Pro 9

Kicking off proceedings is the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, a new model of the now iconic Surface Tablet which they’re describing as ‘A tablet that can replace your laptop’.

The different processor platforms offer some different options, with the Intel platform able to offer up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM, while the Qualcomm solution only offers up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM. Storage wise, the Intel model comes with up to 1TB of SSD storage, while the Qualcomm option only includes up to 512GB, with both platforms starting at 128GB of on-board storage.

The Surface Pro 9 includes a 13” PixelSense Flow touch display with 2880×1920 resolution  with a dynamic refresh rate up to 120Hz. The PixelSense Flow display includes a custom G6 chip for tactile feedback, giving you the feeling of writing on paper when using compatible apps including OneNote or the new GoodNotes app for Windows 11. 

There’s a HD Camera included under the display, along with Omnisonic speakers and directional microphones for improved quality for your calls.

While the Intel based system supports higher memory and storage, the Qualcomm model does have better battery life, with the Qualcomm model offering up to 19 hours of battery life, while the Intel models will have around 15.5 hours. 

Microsoft has also introduced four new colours for the high-grade aluminium casing for the Surface Pro 9 with a choice between Platinum, Graphite, Sapphire and Forest. There’s also a special edition Surface Pro keyboard and laser-etched Surface Pro 9 designed by London-based global design house “Liberty” with a vibrant blue floral design inspired by the Windows 11 Bloom coming to select markets.

Surface Laptop 5

Next up is the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5, offering all-day battery life in a sleek and elegant design powered by 12th Gen Intel Core processors and built on the Intel Evo platform, offering customers 50% more power than its predecessor.

The new Surface Laptop 5 will comes in two sizes with either a 13.5” or 15” PixelSense display in 3:2 aspect ratio. Both the 13.5” and 15” displays support Dolby Vision IQ, which Microsoft says gives you ‘the best possible picture, with vivid colours and sharp contrast in any lighting conditions’ and to complement it, there’s Dolby Atmos 3D support on the Omnisonic Speakers.

Microsoft will offer the Surface Laptop 5 13.5” with either Core i5 or Core i7 processors while the Surface Laptop 5 15” will only come with a Core i7 processor. Both models will include options for up to 1TB SSD storage and up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The Surface Laptop 13.5 will have up to 18 hours battery life, while the 15” model will offer 17 hours of use.

There’s some new new anodized aluminium colours available for the new Surface Laptop 5, with the 13.5” model coming in Platinum with Alcantara, Sage, Matte Black and

Sandstone, while the 15” model comes in either Platinum or Matte Black.

Surface Studio 2+

Microsoft has also announced the new Surface Studio 2+ with a large, vibrant 28” PixelSense touchscreen with Dolby Vision and digital pen support which is mounted on the Zero Gravity Hinge that made the original so easy to adjust, allowing you to weightlessly lower or raise the display to your preferred height. 

The Surface Studio 2+ is powered by an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA RTX 3060 graphics and comes with 32GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB SSD. There’s also Stereo 2.1 speakers with Dolby Atmos and dual far-field mics inside.

Microsoft Presenter+

For your next presentation, you may want to use the new Microsoft Presenter+, a Microsoft  Teams-enabled remote. 

The Presenter+ connects via Bluetooth and gives you control of your slide deck to advance slides as well as control audio to mute/unmute or direct your audience’s attention with an on-screen pointer. 

Microsoft says the Presenter+ is the first presentation control to be certified for Microsoft Teams and will let you stay more involved and in control. There’s also a function to let you raise your hand with a long press on the Teams button to keep you more easily engaged with other participants.

Microsoft Audio Dock

For a more compact audio solution on your desk, the Microsoft Audio Dock can ‘reduce desktop clutter while upgrading your audio for meetings, music, and more’ says Microsoft.

The speaker unit features Ominsonic speakers including a 15-watt woofer and 5-watt tweeters, with four different ports (HDMI, USB-C x2 and USB-A), as well as a pass-through PC charger. 

The Audio Dock includes dual forward-facing omni-directional microphone arrays offering ‘exceptional voice capture and reduced background sound’ and an integrated mute button with indicator light. 

Microsoft Adaptive Accessories

Announced earlier this year, the Microsoft Adaptive Accessory Kit will become available on October 25th offering accessories to make using a PC easier.

These kits include keycap labels, bump labels, port indicators and device openers which Microsoft says will ‘make finding, opening and using devices easier than ever. Easier for anyone.’

Microsoft has also announced that business and education customers will be able 3D print adaptive grips from Shapeways for Microsoft Business Pen and Microsoft Classroom Pen 2.
