New Apple TV 4K adds HDR10+ and Siri Remote goes USB-C

Faster performance, improved picture quality capabilities and a gradual shift to USB-C headline the updated Apple TV 4K which goes on sale Friday November 4.

At $219 it’s still a staggeringly great device for the dollar.

Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing says “Apple TV 4K is the ultimate way for Apple users to enjoy their favourite entertainment on the biggest screen in the home, and now it is more powerful than ever,”

“The new Apple TV 4K is unlike anything else out there, given its seamless connection to other Apple devices, ease of use, and access to amazing Apple content. It offers something for everyone in the family to love.”

It looks the same, but is now powered by the 2021 iPhone chip the A15 Bionic. That means fluid gameplay and a snappier slicker user experience when navigating menus and apps.

For the purists and those who’ve invested in the latest TV technology, Apple TV now adds HDR10+ support alongside Dolby Vision on the Apple TV 4K box.

The other significant change, while simple, is that the Siri Remote is now charged via USB-C. Likely a slow gentle shift toward compliance with Eurpean Union legislation, there’s no other change to how the Siri Remote works.

Also, for what I think is the first time, the entry level Apple TV comes in WiFi only – no Ethernet port, while the Ethernet capability will cost you an additional $30.
