Just days after the NSW Government introduced a new feature to the Service NSW “rego check” website, it’s being used to uncover a vast number of dodgy vehicles being offered for sale online.
The system, first initiated by outgoing Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello was launched this week allowing users to search for a car’s rego on the Service NSW site, where you’ve always been able to check that the car is registered, and for how long, as well as insurance details.
But now, there’s a new section showing the last three years of Odometer Readings.
These readings are taken on cars every year when they under go a rego check, and are inputted into the system by the mechanics undertaking the checks.
The new read-out online means you can see if there is a discrepancy in the odometer readings over those years, or between the last check and the day you inspect a vehicle.
Online car shoppers are reporting more and more cars being listed without number plates – meaning these searches can’t be undertaken before you reach out to a seller
But, buyer beware – when buying a second hand car, you absolutely should check, as TikTok users are showing through many examples of dodgy odometers readings on online listings.
Take a look at these.
The message here is, check the rego, don’t assume anything.
Every, single, time.
Shoutout to TikTok users @dodovkilometre and @ServiceNSW187 for trawling the sites for scam cars.
