109,966 new vehicles were sold in Australia last month, a 15.4 percent increase on the same month in 2022 which is staggering given all the talk of a cost of living crisis right?
Tony Weber, the head of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says its encouraging for the car industry “The Australian automotive sector continues to demonstrate its strength, with August recording unprecedented sales figures, reflecting both a high level of demand from Australians and improved supply of vehicles.
“Year-to-date sales have increased 9.9 per cent which is a better indicator of the underlying strength of the market.” Mr Weber said.
EFTM’s analysis of the figures show that 10% of all passenger car sales were Electric in August, with 8% of all SUV’s sold being fully electric also, and those two categories combined mean a 9% EV takeup rate.
This doesn’t take into account the light commercial category, mainly because there’s no options to take up there yet.
Overall, Toyota is the Number 1 seller in Australia with 133,747 vehicles sold, followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, MG, Tesla, Subaru and Isuzu.
In terms of the top selling models they are listed here
In terms of Electric Cars, we know that 1,991 of the 19,336 Passenger cars sold were Electric, and 4,967 of the 62,313 SUVs were electric.
Not all EVs are reported individually, so for example the MGZS shows as a single model yet would include some EV sales, but for those we know are pure EV’s here’s the top 24 selling EVs in Australia in August.
