Previewing this week’s Apple Event: The iPhone 15 and More

As the calendar flips to September, tech aficionados and Apple loyalists know what’s coming. This year, Apple’s September Event is scheduled for 3am on Wednesday (Australian Eastern Time), and speculation is at an all-time high. So let’s take a look at what to expect on Wednesday Morning – 3am Sydney time.

The iPhone 15: A New Chapter

The iPhone 15 promises to be a significant update, particularly for Australians clinging to their iPhone Xs and iPhone 11s from yesteryears. What’s interesting about this year’s model is that it aims to appeal to a broader demographic of iPhone owners, especially those who haven’t upgraded in 4-6 years.

There’s always the narks who say this year’s device is not much different to the last, but those people overlook the fact that the market for this phone isn’t an iPhone 14, 13 or even iPhone 12 owner. In fact, it’s more likely to be those with the older phones who flock to the iPhone 15, which – in my view, could be the biggest iPhone release in years.

Listen to my preview with Stephen Fenech:

The Switch to USB-C

Since the Lightning connector was introduced with the iPhone 5 in 2012, it’s been Apple’s go-to for charging. However, with the European Union mandating the standardisation of charging ports by next year, Apple is making the shift to USB-C a year early. While faster charging is a bonus, Apple is expected to only allow that optimal performance to be delivered through Apple-certified cables – not something they’ll make a big deal about on stage, but it will be a massive talking point across the day and via narky tiktokers for some time to come.

The End of the Mute Toggle

A stalwart feature since the first iPhone launched in 2007, the mute toggle switch is rumored to be on its way out. Replacing it will be an “action key,” a customisable button that users can program to perform specific tasks, ranging from muting calls to activating Siri. This move signals Apple’s push towards greater device personalisation.

Design Changes and New Features

The iPhone 15 isn’t just about internal upgrades like the processor or the cameras; it will also see some cosmetic tweaks. Expect more rounded edges and the “Dynamic Island” feature—initially exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models—to extend across the entire iPhone 15 lineup. Plus, for those considering splurging on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, keep an eye out for a high-end optical zoom lens that promises to revolutionise mobile photography – well, that’s what Apple will say anyway.

Beyond the iPhone

The iPhone 15 will undoubtedly be the star of the show, but it won’t be a solo act. Apple AirPods are expected to get a revamp in line with the new USB-C charging standard. As for the Apple Watch, expect incremental updates to the Series 9 and Ultra 2, likely focusing on health metrics and interface improvements.

Apple’s Event this week promises to be an exciting one, complete with significant updates that will not only satisfy die-hard Apple fans but also draw in potential new users.
