Fetch turns to Hybrid Android Operating System for new Fetch Mini G5

Fetch has announced that their latest generation “Mini” set top box is running a hybrid RDK-Android operating system which could open up a huge new world of Apps for Australian consumers.

Let’s not beat around the bush, while Fetch aren’t saying it – this potentially opens up the option for some apps which have been missing from Fetch to be available to Fetch users.

Fetch say in their press release that this platform “enables Fetch to easily add Android apps into the RDK ecosystem to enhance the content choice, value and user experience for Fetch customers”

Dominic Arena, Fetch CEO, said “We have invested heavily over the past year to pioneer this revolutionary hybrid technology together with our software integration partner, Consult Red, to enable us to deliver an unmatched suite of family-friendly entertainment and lifestyle options all in one place, on Fetch. We’ve upped the game in the Australian home entertainment market where no one today matches the Fetch platform’s breadth of features, capabilities and options for family households at such an affordable price.

When looking at the imminent closure of Telstra TV and the mass marketing of Fetch’s newest rival Hubbl, it’s hard to avoid the fact that Kayo Sports and Binge are two apps that are missing in action for Fetch and could easily be costing them customers.

While it’s not been said explicitly, you’d have to assume Fetch boffins are testing both in their labs on this new RDK-Android platform.

Fetch Mini G5 is cheaper too, with an RRP of just $149.

For a device capable of so much, it’s a cracking buy, available now from Telstra, iiNet, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys.
