While at CES in January we saw a bunch of nifty little features coming to Samsung devices, and now we know they are ready for Aussie buyers, including new AI and Smart Screens to make a smart home more versatile.
Honestly, the term smart home has been somewhat overused, but not in a disingenuous way, more that 15 years ago we didn’t know what we would want or what devices would be capable of in a smart home. Today the reality is much clearer and what people are looking for is a combination of control, and information from their devices.
Samsung’s Smart Things platform may be the company’s most valuable acquisition, dating back to 2014 the company has used this as a way to underpin their household products, but also allow a vast and open ecosystem of brands to co-exist. That now means you can view a 3D Map of your home on your phone, fridge or even washing machine to understand what’s what, what’s on and what’s happening.
At the top of the tree when it comes to home appliances has to be the Samsung Family Hub – this is the fridge with the computer screen on it. While at first it was a gimmick, though loaded with capability, it feels far more like we’re seeing the capabilities catch up to the reality of both the device and user demands.
Your Fridge can now “see” what you put in it, and then on the touch-screen outside prompt you to set an expiry date (which for some products it will predict based on learned knowledge), and then help you ensure you use the products you have within their used-by periods.
This means the meal planning and recipe creation on the Family Hub is more closely linked to your actual food supply, efficient and ensuring less waste.
The new larger external screen makes interacting with the smart capabilities easier, and a better canvas for your things like notes, calendars and other planning – because I still think that’s the best feature of Family Hub.
Of course, being an AI Home Screen, it also allows deep integration and control of other Samsung Appliances and your Smart Things ecosystem.
If you don’t want to go all in on the Family Hub, there is also a model with a smaller AI screen for basic home details and controls
Getting alerts on any screen that the washing is done, the dishes are done or that you left the fridge open is a game changer. Of course, no point getting that message on the fridge. Which is why the screens on other devices, like your washing machine can be a big part of that whole home solution.
Samsung hope that through a combination of on-device processing, and Edge AI (that is using the edge of the cloud for the final compute), will ensure your AI powered devices can adapt to your routines and better serve individual housholds.
We told you about the new high-powered Bespoke AI Jet Ultra last month, but one of the things I found fascinating was it’s use of sensors to determine the vacuum power – not a world first, but important! And for the true nerds, there’s a smart screen on the vacuum – which can show your smart phone notifications while you vacuum. Possibly the answer to a question nobody asked, but – we’ll take it!
