When I think about attending a live game of Rugby League, in particular State of Origin – making a phone call isn’t something I’d be doing very much. But Vodafone has pulled the data from their Suncorp Stadium towers and come up with some big numbers.
30,750 phone calls were made during Origin! I guess it was QLD fans calling home to say they’d be home early?
Fans sharing photos and videos online also chewed through 5,720 Gigabytes of data!!
For comparison, the opening game of 2024 was at Accor Stadium in Sydney – that’s a bigger venue (77,000 vs 52,000), and the numbers align closely to that scale. With Suncorp’s crowd 67% of Sydney’s, the difference in call numbers was 64% of 2025’s, but in 2025 we’re using more data, with the GB count 75% of 2024.
Pay attention to the game folks!
