OpenAI launches an all new version of ChatGPT powered by GPT-5

32 months since the launch of ChatGPT the company behind this AI revolution OpenAI has today announced it’s latest generation called GPT-5 which brings faster processing and a stronger emphasis on reasoning to the AI chat bot.

While most of us aren’t paying too much attention to the “version” of ChatGPT, continual improvement is not just about adding new features, but also improving accuracy.

OpenAI described their GPT-3 as like talking to a high school student, while the later model GPT-4 is like talking to a College Student.

Launching GPT-5 for all users today, and removing all the old models, OpenAI says this is like talking to an Expert.

You will find it pausing to think, and offering more fulfilling responses than ever before. But it’s “smart” enough to pick between giving you a fast or thoughtful response rather than you having to do this, it will think for the perfect amount of time to give you the answer you need.

There’s an emphasis on development with ChatGPT, that’s a core audience for the company – offering Software development assistance and support.

But for us average users, it’s about improving Factuality – making it right more often.

This very announcement acknowledges a real problem with AI – its hallucinations – its inaccuracies. Something all users need to take into account when using AI of any variety.

Already ChatGPT can be connected to your Email to allow you to request deep research into your own inbox, but coming next week you’ll also be able to ask it to help you with things like organising your day, through which it will use both your email and calendar to create a schedule and priorities. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

And while we all know that we’ve been guilty of “Dr Googling” medical questions, somewhat alarmingly, OpenAI chose to highlight a staff member and their partner who had received a Cancer diagnoses and admitted to using ChatGPT to not only understand what the complex diagnosis results meant before speaking to their Doctor, but also to determine their treatment path going forward when Medical teams could not agree. This will raise questions for many people as we move forward, the positive side of this is to give “agency” back to individuals in understanding their situation, the concern might be having ChatGPT decide people’s health care treatment decisions – something I’m not sure society is really ready for.

GPT-5 will replace all existing models, and they will be phased out. GPT-5 will also be available to all users, free or paid, and is available today.
