Up in Arms – Who wants to fight when on holidays?

New data has revealed that almost a quarter of all fights whilst on holidays are caused by data and connectivity issues.

Vodafone have released survey data to suggest 22% of fights involving travel companions revolve around mobile connectivity and they have some interesting insights into what exactly the main culprits are when these spats take place.

We’re all guilty of taking the cheap option of avoiding purchasing data overseas to save money, but are the arguments worth not shelling out a few bucks?

Nearly half of those admitting to having disagreements over data access (47%) stated that not having mobile data access overseas is one of the most frustrating parts of travel but 20% of travellers actively avoided daily roaming services.

A further 12% said that post-trip bill shock was a cause of tension, 13.8% blame not having access to maps and subsequently getting lost caused clashes, and the one I am most guilty of, 18.3% had arguments when split up, fighting about not being able to communicate with each other. (Apologies to my wife who in 2013 was none too impressed with me running ahead in the Paris subway to buy tickets)

In my defense 12 years ago access to data was hard to come by and very expensive. Nowadays things are so much easier and cheaper.

Vodafone thinks it has the answer by offering a set, daily roaming fee, with no hidden fees which simply gives you access to your normal plan as if you were still in Australia.

A Vodafone spokesperson said: “A holiday is your time to recharge, not drain it by arguing over data or getting lost. It’s about having the right tools to have peace of mind, whether that’s navigating a new city or sharing memories with someone back home.

“Vodafone’s $5 roaming can help eliminate these data domestics by giving customers to the opportunity to capture and share every fantastic experience without worrying about hidden costs or searching for WiFi.”

Travellers in 2025 rely heavily on mobile access to check maps, organise accommodation and travel plus manage finances and expenses. There is something to be said for just switching off when you are on holidays but in reality, life is so much easier when you can log in and get things done, giving you more time to simply enjoy your surroundings.

So if you are about to go on holidays or are planning to get away soon, make sure mobile data access is given the highest of priorities. It just might save your relationship
