It seems like the time goes by faster each year, and with the end of 2025 fast approaching, the year-end round ups are starting with Google Australia showing off what we searched this year.
It’s been a year, from a Federal Election to natural disasters, new trends (looking at you 6-7), a Taylor Swift Album and more K-pop than you can poke a stick, including a wonderful movie, and of course politics.
Understandably with wild weather hitting South East Queensland and the New South Wales North Coast earlier this year, Cyclone Alfred topped our list of trending searches. Politics stepped in, and the Federal Election, right-wing podcaster Charlie Kirk and Iran were also understandably high on the list
Pop culture understandably entered the fray, with a new documentary on Belle Gibson and Ed Gein airing on Netflix sparking searches on those two – for very different reasons.
We also faced losing some legends this year. Our searches after deaths including music legend Ozzy Osbourne entered the top 10, with searches for Gene Hackman, Val Kilmer, Dianne Keaton and local Australian actor Julian McMahon making the top 10 list of celebrities searched after loss.
An interesting category – at least for my kitchen inclined mind, was the inclusion of our top 10 Recipe searches.
The top of the list is a subject that will become controversial just after Christmas – Hot Cross Bun recipes, with a Easter Recipes also making the top 5.
Bacon is always a favourite, so it’s good to see everyone keeping those skills up to date, but the trends that crept in also made the list including the infamous ‘Dubai Chocolate’, as well as the biggest trend – the Ninja Slushie – probably a good place to try out the Pornstar Martini recipe in bulk while you’re there.
While we’re good with our cooking, Aussies also wanted to know how to do more things, with the ‘How to’ showing links to the Top Trending Searches of the year, including How to Vote, and How to prepare for a cyclone.
There’s a lot of lists to break down the top 10 for 2025, with the Google Australia blog listing search breakdowns in topics including News Events, Sports, Travel, DIY and loads more.
