Samsung SmartThings Becomes First to Adopt Matter 1.5 bringing support for Smart Cameras and more

After the recent announcement of camera support and more coming to the new Matter 1.5 release last month, Samsung announced they’ll be adding support to their Smart Things platform.

Samsung is the first to add support for Matter 1.5, which also includes ‘enhanced features for closure operations’ for blinds, awnings, and garage doors and improvements to energy management.

Matter is the smart home standard from the Connectivity Standards Allianace (CSA) which is composed of big names in smart homes including Google, Apple, Amazon, Samsung and more to simplify smart home devices and make them available across platforms.

Matter support will enable customers to import their indoor and outdoor security cameras, as well as video doorbells, and more. What each camera will support via Matter will differ between different manufacturers, but Samsung says that camera features on supported devices caninclude:

  • Live streaming — Watch your home in real time from anywhere.
  • Clip storage — Securely save and access video recordings.
  • Two-way talk — Communicate through your camera.
  • Motion detection — Receive alerts for movement in or around your home.
  • Advanced camera settings – Customize preferences to suit your needs.
  • Event history — See a timeline of event notifications.
  • Motion and privacy zones — Block zones from reporting motion and from clear view to protect your privacy.

Samsung has previously added camera support with partnerships with Aqara, Arlo, Hue, Ring, and others, but with this update you’ll have even more options – adding in cameras supporting Matter to your Smart Things ecosystem.

The update will be rolling out as soon as next month, with Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics saying

“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings. We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”

The addition of Matter 1.5 support increases the number of devices available in the Samsung Smart Things platform which now supports over 4,700 models from over 390 partner brands – and with continued Matter support, that’s only going to increase.
