LG Unveils CLOiD Home Robot to Realize “Zero Labor Home” Vision

The future of our homes will be automated, says LG after introducing their latest innovation, the LG CLOiD Home Robot.

The AI-powered home robot, teased last week as part of LG’s Zero Labour Home vision, will be able to perform a number of functions around the home including laundry and working in the kitchen to prepare meals, which will be shown off at LG’s booth at CES.

The robot has a very human-like upper half, with a head unit that includes a display, mounted on a height adjustable torso that includes arms and hands with five independently articulated fingers.

The head will be the ‘brains’ of the operation, acting as an AI home hub, including a display, speaker and camera, as well as a load of sensors to help navigate.LG says CLOiD will display facial expressions as well as talk with the humans in the home, learning the family dynamics and patterns around the home so it can better operate around the home.

The arms can move around like a human arm, with the new LG Axium actuators able to move the arm with seven degrees of freedom, allowing the robot’s arm, wrist and elbow to match human motion which LG says allows CLOiD to ‘handle a wide range of household objects and operate in kitchens, laundry rooms and living areas’.

The robot will navigate around your home using a wheeled base, which has  a low center of gravity that reduces the risk of tipping, with LG using the technology from their Q9 robot vacuums to keep costs down.

To make the robot even more useful, LG will leverage their ThinQ Smart Home, and ThinQ On AI Home Hub platform to allow the robot to interact with LG appliances around your home.

Steve Baek, president of the LG Home Appliance Solution Company said of CLOiD

“The LG CLOiD home robot is designed to naturally engage with and understand the humans it serves, providing an optimised level of household help. We will continue our relentless efforts to achieve our Zero Labour Home vision, making housework a thing of the past so that customers can spend more time on the things that really matter.”

We’ll be seeing CLOiD in action at CES later this week when the show opens.
