Nearly half of all KIAs sold last weekend were electric – EV Sales boom!

We all know that the month of March was a record for Electric Vehicle sales in Australia. Almost 16,000 cars sold and the highest percentage for EVs as a part of the overall market ever.

But that’s just the start of it. When we reported those sales numbers we indicated that it would in fact be the months ahead that saw the bigger jump in EV sales and we’re more confident in that statement now than ever.

Speaking to EFTM as the opening of the Melbourne Motor Show today, KIA Australia’s Head of Marketing Dean Norbiato shared a staggering statistic.

On an average weekend, Electric Cars make up around 10% of KIA’s new car sales. Last weekend, a staggering 48% of all KIA’s sold were Electric.

That’s remarkable.

KIA has the largest range of fully electric EVs across all the brands, giving it a great chance to capture a buyer no matter their budget. Norbiato says that their dynamic duo the EV3 and EV5 were the biggest sellers, not surprising given their price and place in the market.

This comes as the brand sees exceptional interest in their new fully electric commercial Van the PV5. Just announced with a price tag of $55,990 the PV5 is the best selling electric vehicle in Korea in recent months, and while that may not be replicated here in the whole market, as a known brand dipping into a space where Fuel savings for small business could be the simplest justification for an upgrade – the PV5 is coming to Australia at the right time for business and for KIA.

We’ll keep a keen eye on the April sales numbers when they release, and expect May to be an interesting one as the brands struggle with supply matching demand, so expect a huge April and perhaps June for electric car sales in Australia.
