Energizer Expands Child Shield Tech to Prevent Severe Battery Ingestion Burns from Cell Batteries

Cell batteries are useful, yet also dangerous in the wrong hands – or mouths. Energizer has launched their new Ultimate Child Shield coin lithium batteries, bringing improved safety to eliminate ingestion burns.

From toys, to our smart trackers, Coin, or Cell batteries are in everything these days. The proliferation of these useful batteries has also meant there’s been an increase in ingestion incidents, with an estimated 20 children per week presenting at Emergency Departments across Australia, with them suspected of having ingested or inserted a button battery.

Aside from the choking risk, a cell battery with exposed positive and negative terminals in close proximity can cause burning in as little as 15 minutes once ingested, with life-threatening injuries in just a few hours.

Energizer have expanded their Child Shield technology for coin batteries using years of research and development to produce the world’s only coin lithium battery that prevents burning if swallowed.

The Energizer Ultimate Child Shield also includes the world’s only Colour Alert technology, which dyes the mouth blue when it interacts with saliva – giving parents or caregivers an easily identifiable indicator that a battery may have been ingested.

Previously, Energizer has introduced a non-toxic bitter coating to the battery, as well as ensuring they come in an almost impossible to open, yet extremely child-resistant packaging to help deter incidents.

Amanda Broderick – Senior Director, International Marketing at Energizer Holdings said

As coin lithium batteries play an increasingly important role in powering everyday devices, it’s crucial we continue to innovate. Energizer Ultimate Child Shield does exactly that — it includes a revolutionary technology that eliminates the risk of ingestion burns, if a battery is swallowed by a child,

The Energizer Ultimate Child Shield batteries are now on-sale at retailers around Australia. You can find out more about Energizer Ultimate Child Safety on their website.
