Blown away by MOVA – Hitting Australia with everything but the kitchen sink

Have you heard of MOVA? I hadn’t, until a Robot Lawn Mower showed up at my place. Turns out that’s not even the half of it. This week at a glitzy launch event in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, the company really put themselves on the map here in Australia.

What I learnt was very simple. This is a company that values premium design, innovation, and all the things that, of course, any great company is going to aspire to, but there’s a bit of backing to the words, both in product and in the lineage of the company.

MOVA is a sub-brand of Dreame, and Dreame is a massive robot vacuum company as well as other robotics and other household products. They’ve done very well in Australia, but here they are with another brand operating entirely separately and independently in Australia. Frankly, they are probably already doing better things from a publicity perspective than even Dreamy, and maybe with their eyes on beating Dreamy to the punch in several market sectors.

Just for fun, I’m going to list below every single item that was sent to me after the launch event this week. It’s a long list, and I think it just creates the very clear point about the scale of this company. Before that, I want to focus on a couple of key things that I guess stand out for them in terms of product highlights for the next few months.

Firstly, their robot vacuum

See, now, this is a pretty hard market to crack into. We have enough robot vacuums. We’ve also reached almost peak robot vacuum technology. They clean bloody well, and they’ve got really cool features. Yes, there are some gimmicks out there, but in general, we’ve got what we need. What can Mova add to this? Well, there are a couple of things. There are two models that I think are worth looking at, and they both do equally innovative things:

1. The Mova Z70 roller. This is an outstanding high-end robot vacuum with a roller mop, which is, I think, widely regarded as the best mop. Essentially, if you have only hard floors, this is probably the one for you. What it does is it pushes itself out so that there’s 9 cm of extra reach to the edges. What I love about this is it’s got this little cover that covers the roller mop when you go on a carpet, so there’s no potential residue from the wet mop either scrubbing across or dripping onto the carpet. That’s cool.
2. The Mova V70 ultra complete. This one is again high-end, with 42,000 Pa of suction, but what it has is spinning round mop scrubbers as well as a brush to do the vacuuming and bring in the particles. Both of those things, though, extend out from the vacuum at 12 cm for the brush and 17 cm for the mop extension. When it’s going around things like chair legs or into those corners, it’s actually getting right in there. That is very impressive.

Then we go outdoors, and they’ve got a robot lawnmower or two.

This company is not mucking about when it comes to robot lawnmowers. They’re offering several different models, and essentially they step up in the technology being used.

• The Mova ViAX 300: $1,399, launching at Harvey Norman and MOVA’s own website. It will do fully autonomous mowing using an AI vision system capable of doing 40% slopes, and you’re talking about your average Aussie backyard of 200 to 300 m².
• The LIDAX Ultra 1200: This one has LIDAR as well as vision to really create accurate 3D maps, self-mapping, and great mowing, the autonomous backyard robot.
• The LIDAX Ultra 2000: This thing’s all-wheel drive. It’s got some serious wheels on it, and critically, it’ll actually push its dual-blade system underneath the mower. It’ll push it sideways, and you’ll notice it has a 3 cm to get closer to the edges. It’s not quite an edge trimmer, but it’ll certainly get closer than you’ve ever gotten to the edges wherever possible. This thing can do up to 2,000 m². That’s a $4,000 robot lawn mower, but with a range like that, they’ll get attention

And while we’re outdoors, they’re in the pool as well.

And then there’s the pool cleaners. Again, another hugely booming category that’s been around for a few years, with some brands you’ve never heard of, but now everyone’s getting into this space. It’s becoming competitive, which is also great for prices.

In this space, MOVA is offering at least two products. I saw several more, one of which is made just for backyard above-ground pools and just does the bottom of the pool. Leaving that aside, the Diver A10 is a $1,299 robot pool cleaner that does AI-driven underwater cleaning, has great suction, operates for 4 hours, and will clean the walls, the floor, and the waterline. Excellent.

The real beast is the Rover X10: $4,000. This thing’ll do the waterline, the walls, the steps, the corners, and the floor because it’s built like a drone. This thing flies underwater, so it’s got all the normal suction and all the normal performance. It’s got a huge, I think, 5 L debris bin, but it’s also got these jet areas on the top, four of them, which are kind of like drone propellers. It’s able to be on the floor and then lift itself up and scoot forward so it can do steps. That’s something I’ve never seen before and looks really impressive in demo.

But as promised, it’s not just those three product categories. Here’s the full list, copied and pasted from the press release at the launch event, of everything they’re willing to talk about. I don’t think even this is everything I saw at this week’s launch event.

It’s impressive. I think it demonstrates the company’s got a lot of aspirations, and I think it should give a little bit of faith in a brand that you might not have heard of.
