Nine out of ten people do not floss their teeth as regularly as they should, and the average time we spend brushing our teeth is 45 seconds – well below the two minutes recommended. So what’s this got to do with Dyson? Enter the all-new Dyson CameraJet – the toothbrush designed to solve those problems and more.
James Dyson hasn’t really ever sat still, moving from his successful vacuum business into everything from bathroom hand dryers to hair dryers and curlers among many other things.
And it’s in the bathroom where the next challenge presented itself.
Sure, we have electric toothbrushes already. Yes, we have water flossers that spray jets of water between the teeth to floss, but the Dyson CameraJet does both. And it does it with technology.
The trick is in the name, CameraJet. A 100,000-pixel camera lens sits alongside the brush head and in between them is a jet nozzle which, when the “Gap Optical Targeting” system determines it is in line, will fire a precision burst of mouthwash into the gap to floss.
Dyson founder James Dyson says “Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore. Few of us do it even though we know we should. Dyson engineers and scientists have spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes and how nasties build up in the mouth. Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth. We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, how to remove plaque, and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing. By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and WiFi, Dyson CameraJet™ introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy.”
This is six years of design and development in the making, and not just testing tooth brushing – Dyson even developed their own proxy plaque to allow engineers to iterate quickly when testing to optimise the brush and jet for plaque removal.
Wait, you’re thinking – where does the mouthwash come from?
Well, that’s the real nifty bit of this. In the charging stand is your mouthwash. When you finish your clean and place the Dyson CameraJet down to charge, it also refills a small tank on the device, ready for the next use.
Ok, but if there’s a little “tank” of mouthwash how does that consistently pick up the mouthwash when you’re holding the toothbrush at all angles when brushing? Enter Dyson engineers again, who designed an anti-gravity tank. Basically, there’s an inflatable bag inside the tank that ensures there’s never an air gap in there so the mouthwash feeds in at any angle and at any stage of the clean.
As if to take over the entire brushing process, Dyson also engineered a Toothpaste and Mouthwash solution which includes a non-foaming toothpaste which allows the camera to see between the teeth when brushing.
For me, this is my only concern – I’m very sensitive to new tastes and am not sure I’m ready to brush without my Colgate original recipe 🙂 We will see.
The same goes for mouthwash – some people might take some getting used to it.
But it’s all for the benefit of your teeth and your oral care.
As if all that fancy innovation wasn’t enough, the Dyson CameraJet is also WiFi connected to your smartphone app, so you can see while you clean. Again, not sure I really want to see my teeth that close up, but perhaps it will encourage that longer brushing process as we start to understand just how much we need it.
No images are stored or recorded on the product or in the cloud – they are for your eyes only.
At $799, it’s not cheap – but what Dyson product is? Will be interesting to see how it’s received by users.
