DJI announces second generation AI-powered ROMO 2 Robot Vaccum with LiDAR guided robot arm

Robotics company DJI have announced their ROMO 2 vacuum cleaners at IFA featuring next-generation AI cleaning intelligence and more.

The ROMO 2 utilises DJI’s smarts in drones and cameras, building on the spatial perception and smart home know-how from the original ROMO vacuum robots announced earlier this year. 

This second generation ROMO will be able to better navigate around your home including over double-step thresholds up to 8.5cm using AI-based object avoidance and path building. AI will also be used for detecting, planning and cleaning the different spills and messes around your home.

To get the best cleaning, the DJI ROMO 2 adds a pressure plate it lowers when vacuuming, creating a ‘semi-seal’ against the floor, making the 36,000 Pa of suction power more effective, with dual tangle-free side brushes overlapping to reach every square centimeter of floor.

The vacuum also now includes a LiDAR guided robotic arm with a mopping pad on the end, able to reach 7.8cm wider than the usual path, and getting in under furniture just 4.5cm high. The LiDAR can also glide close to walls and furniture without making contact.

The AI will guide cleaning, using on-board cameras to spot and analyse messes, using a ground-level LED light to illuminate dust and debris in low-light. 

The AI can tell the difference between liquid spills and debris, analysing the individual mess ’before autonomously executing the optimal cleaning approach’. The AI can also tell the difference between glass and mirrors, avoiding them or ignoring them if necessary. 

The DJI ROMO 2 comes with a self-cleaning base station with a stain-resistant nanocrystalline surface which is cleaned with four high-pressure water jets,  with DJI claiming 365 days of maintenance free operation. 

The base station charges the ROMO 2 battery – with 55W fast charging filling the battery in just two and a half hours. 

DJI are also getting more serious about privacy, addressing concerns over security from the initial DJI ROMO launch. To offset concerns, DJI are introducing a Local Data Mode which will launch on the ROMO 2 later this year, as well as the original DJI ROMO vacuum. 

When you switch this on, the DJI Home app disconnects from the internet, preventing what DJI calls ‘unintentional syncing of photos or videos with external servers’. DJI also notes you can disable the camera and microphone from the DJI Home app at any time.
