How F1 levelled up with a Kimi Antonelli Podium POV Video using an Insta360 GO 3S

F1 fans were treated to a pretty awesome race last weekend in Monza with Italian youngster Kimi Antonelli coming from the back of the grid to clinch the win as the first Italian to do so at his home race in 60 years, but it was the Social Media video posted in the day after that took my interest.

The Monza race-track podium is one of the most impressive in the sport, it is built overhanging the pit-lane and all the Italian fans are allowed onto the main straight creating a sea of people underneath the top three drivers as they celebrate, hear the anthems and spray champagne. It’s a spectacular scene.

But of course – as your resident nerd, that got me thinking – what camera was he wearing?

What camera did Kimi Antonelli wear for his Italian Grand Prix Podium POV?

I initially thought it might be DJI’s Osmo Nano – a great little camera that’s so small you can’t believe it. But there’s one better, and it was this photo and the one above that helped me identify it

If we take the first photo and crop in we can see a good bit of detail.

Notably, the shape of the Insta 360 and DJI are the same, but a big giveaway is the DJI is the branding, it’s extreme – and perhaps why F1 didn’t use it.

The comments on social media LOVE this view, so imagine we’ll see it again.

It’s a $600 camera at JB HiFI. I reckon what the F1 TV broadcast team would be working out is how they can incorporate it into the Live Broadcast too. This year they’ve made Drones a weekly part of the race coverage so its likely they’ll be thinking about any angle possible.
