OPPO launch the Find X10 flagship smartphone series in China — here’s what we are in for later in the year

Ahead of its international and Australian launch, OPPO has launched its newest flagship smartphone in China.  As it does every year, it gives us a peek into what we will see when it lands here in Australia.

This year, OPPO has launched three devices as part of the Find X10 series, the flagship Find X10 Pro Max, the Find X10 and the Find X10 E.

Most of the focus will be on the Pro Max version of the series, given its impressive specs and, from what we can see from the launch and its Chinese website, its potential as a photography powerhouse.  Most of the phone’s website focuses on the camera and its capabilities.

First up, the rear camera specs include:

• 200MP wide-angle camera: f/1.5, equivalent focal length 24mm, 7P lens with AF autofocus, supports two-axis OIS stabilisation;
• 200MP ultra-wide camera: f/2.2, equivalent focal length 13mm, 7P lens with AF autofocus, 124° wide field of view
• 200MP telephoto camera: f/2.1, 70mm equivalent focal length, 3P+3P lens with AF autofocus, supports two-axis OIS image stabilisation
• 2nd generation Danxia color reproduction lens: f/2.4, equivalent focal length 19mm, 3P lens

• Supports 3x optical zoom and up to 120x digital zoom

The front-facing selfie camera is a 50MP camera that supports AF autofocus.

OPPO are partnering with Hasselblad once again for that impressive photo and image reproduction.  The various cameras in the setup allow for a lot of flexibility in image capture with an entire landscape scene being able to be captured in its fullest thanks to the 200MP ultra-wide camera with a brand-new ultra-large sensor and large aperture, doubling light intake.

Each camera has its own uses, and the phone uses them to capture the moment as it appears, with the camera intelligently deciding which camera to use at each time.

The focus is on capturing “natural, beautiful skin texture,” and “preserving the truest truth,” which I am a fan of – less AI and post-processing and more capturing of the scene as you see it, in its true form.  Google has always been really good at this, so it will be interesting to see how OPPO has transitioned to this now as well.

Natural tones and colours are captured and reproduced with the help of the second-generation Danxia colour reproduction lens and now support frame-by-frame colour reproduction for both live and video scenarios

A new OPPO Hasselblad teleconverter set also arrives with the new Find X10 Pro Max and it is unclear at this stage if last year’s teleconverter will fit onto the new phone.  I suspect it might but whether it works as intended is another story – I will be testing that out when the review units arrive later this year.

Find X10 E

• 6.59-inch display (2760×1256, up to 120Hz)

• Rear Cameras: 50MP main, 50MP 120° ultrawide, 50MP 3x telephoto
• Front Camera: 32MP
• Battery: 7,025 mAh
• Charging: 80W wired/67W wireless

Unfortunately, it seems the phones don’t support any form of magnetic-alignment wireless charging, such as MagSafe or PixelSnap-type magnets.  This is very disappointing and surprising to be honest, from OPPO.  Qi2.2, which has now been the standard for over a year, supports these magnets, but OPPO still hasn’t added it.  

OPPO sells cases with built-in magnets, so they know it’s popular, but they haven’t found room for them yet.  The international version likely still lacks it too, as it would be a big undertaking, but we will have to wait and see.

So we know the phone’s makeup. I am impressed with the specs of the camera and we will have to see if they make much difference in the quality of images and videos captured, given how good the last one was, it’s difficult to see where it (and other flagship devices) could make any significant improvement. The display looks impressive once again but OPPO has had one of the best on the market for a long time, so that should not come as a surprise.

I am disappointed there’s no OPPO Qi2.2/PixelSnap/MagSafe solution, so if you buy this and like the magnetic charging/docking, you will likely need to buy a supporting case.

Look for the OPPO Find X10 series to launch in Australia in November, and you can bet we will be reviewing them as soon as possible.
