A Cordless that WORKS in a blackout

The problem with power failures – be they a local fuse or a street or suburb wide blackout – is that a lot of the modern technology we use becomes completely useless.

One of the most vital of those technologies is the phone. If you’ve got a cordless phone at your home you are completely stuffed!  You will need to have a direct ‘old style’ phone plugged directly in to get service.

Until now.

Today Panasonic announced the 662 Series DECT Cordless phones.  These phones operate as normal digital cordless handsets.  However, unlike any other cordless they will provide some service in a power outage.

This system works by allowing you to place the phones in the base and use the ‘speaker’ function to make or receive calls.  I havent tested the device yet, but assume that the device may in fact get some of the power required from the battery in the cordless handset.  Otherwise, it’s using simple base phone system with speaker amplification to allow this to work in an outage.

Great concept, good looks – the full company announcement is below.
