No more Negus. Network Ten axes 6:30 with George Negus, shifts The Project forward

One of Network Ten’s big hires over the last year was George Negus from SBS. The famous Australian news journalist shifted networks to boost Ten’s push to become a more serious news source as it tried to catch market leaders Seven and Nine.

Negus fronted his own program, 6:30 with George Negus, but less than a year into the programme, Ten executives have axed it and shifted The 7pm Project to 6:30pm, renaming it The Project. Negus will now become a regular on The Project panel and will remain at Network Ten full time to contribute to its news and current affairs efforts. The reason for the axing has been low ratings over the show’s history.

In a prepared statement, Negus said, “Working on 6.30 has been incredibly fulfilling. From reporters to production crew, we have worked together to bring viewers a high quality, soil-breaking program and some of the year’s biggest stories and interviews. We are immensely proud of all we have achieved. The truth is that unfortunately a program like 6.30 was ahead of its time, but who knows about the future? Though, sadly, 6.30 has come to an end, I’m looking forward to getting back with my mates at The Project.”

Sadly it’s the end of 6:30 and Negus hosting with his signature top two shirt buttons undone and the 60’s chest hair showing… not that it’s a bad thing… or is it?
