Greg Chalmers takes The Lakes, Tiger Woods makes impressive comeback

Aussie Greg Chalmers claimed the Australian Open title at The Lakes in Sydney today. It was a roller-coaster weekend for a bunch of Aussies in the field, as well as one other important player – Tiger Woods.

Chalmers Shot four consistent rounds of 67, 72 ,67 and 69 to end at the top of the leaderboard on 13 under par one shot ahead of John Senden. Tiger Woods would be kicking himself today, finishing third at 11 under after a final round 67.  Yesterday the old master destroyed his Open with a three over 75 in a round that featured just two Birdies and five Bogeys. Compare that to his final round of five Birdies, an Eagle and two Bogeys  and there really is some great form coming back for the former world Number 1 who has struggled to find form since his win at the Australian Masters in Melbourne in late 2009. Woods hasn’t won a tournament for two years but we’re beginning to see the form return that made him one of the greats of golf.

Ironically, it was Greg Chalmers who finished second at the 2009 Australian Masters behind Tiger so if there was ever a gauge of Tiger’s return to form perhaps today’s result is just that. Plenty of people have written Tiger off – but I think after some stunning holes this weekend that’s all a bit premature. Watch out next year for Tiger Woods to hit the big time again and climb back into the top 10 rankings on the PGA Tour.
