Lonely Planet reveals the 10 engineering marvels of the world

Men like to build things. At times they are not very good at it, but when they get it right, they really get it right. Lonely Planet reveals 10 times they outdid themselves.

Of course, it’s a bit narrow minded to say that women didn’t have anything to do with these feats. They certainly would have, especially with the more modern engineering marvels on the list. The list reads of a perfect boys trip if you’re looking for some holiday inspiration. Fly in a jumbo, hire a sports car and visit one of these and you have the perfect man’s holiday.

Unsurprisingly, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Giza, Egypt took out the number one spot. Today experts still argue about how the Egyptians managed to carry out the feat in the time they did. By most accounts, it’s an impossibility. Theories of alien intervention have even been mentioned once or twice. It required two million limestone blocks weighing over two tonnes each to be moved into place.

Other structures to make the list include the Aya Sofia in Istanbul, Turkey, which EFTM can say first hand is amazing. The mosque was created in AD537 and has a 30 metre dome. Other obvious inclusions are The Great Wall of China, The Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates and Millau Viaduct in France.

There are some interesting inclusions too, including the Indian Railways. For the complete list visit Lonely Planet. If it doesn’t give you some holiday inspiration, nothing will.
