The best movies of all time: What are your favourites?

Here, within the four walls of EFTM, we like to harbour a safe environment for men, where we can discuss things like our favourite movies without fear of the ‘better half’ pushing Four Weddings and a Funeral up the list.  So, what are your favourites?

It was actually Nick’s post regarding the special edition Triumph that got me thinking about this, because The Great Escape is easily in my top three.

Of course, taste in movies is like taste in food – they are a very individual thing. So what about you? Jump to the comments at the bottom of the page and tell us your top three.

Here are ours, plus we’ve picked up the phone and the twitters to a few friends of EFTM to get their thoughts..

Top 3 Movies of all time:

“Baby” John Burgess – Game Show Legend

  1. Bullitt – Steve McQueen – Sensational Car chase in it
  2. The Godfather – Part 1
  3. Wall St – Michael Douglas

Barry O’Farrell – NSW Premier

  1. Lord of the Rings trilogy (Favourite is Return of the King)
  2. The Third Man (Orson Welles)
  3. The Year My Voice Broke.

Merrick Watts – Radio and Comedy Legend – Triple M (2012)

I chose these because they are three films I love and always find something new upon viewing again.

  1. Star Wars (a New Hope)
  2. Platoon
  3. Pan’s Labrynth

Ray Hadley – Talkback Radio Host (2GB Sydney)

  1. Notting Hill (love Julia Roberts)
  2. How Green Was My Valley
  3. Ace Ventura Pet Detective

Baratunde – The Onion

  1. Network
  2. The Matrix
  3. Chinatown

Greg Rust – Ten Sport

  1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – the original and the best.  I vividly remember seeing it as a 7 year old with my Dad and my brother.  Awesome!
  2. Anchorman starring Will Ferrell – I’m a massive fan of this because it takes a poke at the industry I work in.  I find Ferrell incredibly funny especially in Talladega Nights!
  3. Le Mans – this is an odd pick because it burnt a hole in the late Steve McQueen’s pocket but it was a labour of love.  It’s light on dialogue but the action shots, for its time, are fantastic and McQueen is among my favourite actors.  Arguably the best motorsports movie ever.

Rusty also claims to have a massive soft spot for Flying High (called Airplane in the US) – “still one of the funniest movies ever made!”

Joe Hildebrand – Daily Telegraph

  1. Superman
  2. Superman II
  3. Superman III

Brian “Spoonman” Carlton – Triple M

  1. Harold and Maude (1971) – The ultimate social misfit love story with a message that is still relevant
  2. Happiness (1998) – A totally debauched quiet riot of a film with no discernible message by the deeply troubled twisted genius Todd Solondz
  3. Contact (1997) – Based on Carl Sagan’s penetrating peeling of the onion layers of the human condition using a fictional alien message

Trevor Long – EFTM

  1. The Shawshank Redemption
  2. The Great Escape
  3. Cars (Pixar)

Damian Francis – EFTM

  1. The Spanish Apartment: Travel, dreams, friends and drinks. You don’t need anything more. Bloody well written too.
  2. Lost in Translation: More travel and Japan. Plus Scarlett.
  3. Definitely Maybe: Broughall and Long are hanging out for me to drop my chick-flick pick in, so here it is. Ryan Reynolds is a legend – I want to look half as stylish as that guy. And the plot isn’t too bad either.

Nick Broughall – EFTM

  1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – Even after all these years, I still get excited by the final run at the Death Star
  2. Aliens – The ultimate sci-fi horror action flick.
  3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – Most people love Raiders, but Sean Connery makes this my favourite of the trilogy (number four does not exist).
